Cats are a bit like us and they like to urinate/defecate where it is a little bit private and well away from their food! Usually kitchens are fairly busy parts of the house with lots of family members coming and going and generally being occupied. The kitchen tends to be where cats get fed and cats do not like having their toilet next to, or near their food.
