Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis in Hamsters

The lymphocytic choriomeningitis ( LCM) virus occurs naturally in wild rodents. It can occur in hamsters but is more likely to be found in mice.

In the hamster the LCM virus is not likely to cause any symptoms. It will usually cause a persistent low level infection with excretion of the virus in the urine and saliva. It is of concern because it can be transmitted to humans. In people it can cause a range of signs from mild influenza to fatal meningitis. It is possible to obtain hamsters from LCM free stock and pet shops and schools should do so.
